This paint-splattered easel belong to Edward L. Loper, Sr. (1916-2011), a celebrated African American artist born and raised on the east side of Wilmington, Delaware. Loper had no formal artistic training but developed his talents during the Great Depression by creating drawings for the Index of American Design, a Works Progress Administration project. His paintings appear in numerous American institutions, including the University of Delaware, the Philadelphia Art Museum, and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.
