Group Portrait of First Communion Group, Our Mother of Mercy Chapel
-
Churchgoing is important for understanding a community's values, and can also indicate its boundaries.
-
Photograph of Reverend Conrad Rebesher, S.S.J. with nine children. All pose with hands in prayer at Our Mother of Mercy Chapel. Because this item belongs to collections of African American Catholicism as well as the Bureau of Indian Missions, it may include both Indigenous and Black children, illustrating how the Catholic church (and also other authorities) sometimes grouped non-white communities together. Rev. Rebesher was widely recognized as the leader of the Black Catholic Church in Delaware.
